UPVC Door Maintenance: What You Need to Know

The best thing about UPVC doors is that they need very little attention. The second-best thing is that the little attention they do need takes minutes, not hours. Here's a practical Kanpur-friendly maintenance routine.

Every 3–6 months: clean the frame and panels

Wipe frames and panels with a soft cloth and warm soapy water (a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid in a bucket). Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth. This removes Kanpur's dust and pollution before it can etch or dull the surface. Avoid abrasive scrubbers, thinners or solvents — they damage the UPVC finish permanently.

Every 6 months: clean the gaskets and drainage holes

The rubber EPDM gasket around the door is what keeps water, dust and noise out. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Check the small weep holes on the bottom of the frame outside — if these clog with dust or leaves, monsoon water sits in the frame instead of draining. Clear them with a soft brush or a toothpick.

Once a year: lubricate hinges and locks

Use a dry silicone spray or a light machine oil (not WD-40 — it attracts dust). A tiny amount on each hinge, on the multi-point locking mechanism where it meets the frame, and on any moving hardware. Wipe off excess. Well-lubricated hardware operates smoothly and lasts twice as long.

Every 2 years: inspect gaskets and seals

Look along the entire gasket for cracks, gaps or areas that have gone flat. A gasket that no longer compresses properly won't seal against wind and rain. Small sections can be replaced by a technician; a serious manufacturer keeps the same profile of gasket in stock for decades so replacement is straightforward.

After heavy monsoons: check for water ingress

Kanpur's July storms are the real test. Look for water marks on the inside of the frame, plaster damage around the door or damp at the sill. Any of these means a seal, drainage or installation issue that needs attention before it causes lasting damage.

Adjusting a door that has dropped

Over years, a heavy door can sag slightly on its hinges. Most quality UPVC hinges are adjustable in three directions using an Allen key. If your door starts scraping the frame or the latch no longer aligns, call the manufacturer — a five-minute adjustment usually fixes it, no replacement needed.

Things you should never do

Don't paint UPVC — paint doesn't adhere properly and will flake within months. Don't use abrasive cleaners, steel wool or thinners. Don't slam the door — it stresses the hinges and locking mechanism. Don't hang heavy objects from the handle or frame.

Warranty and service

Keep your original warranty documents. Reputable manufacturers offer service call-outs at reasonable cost for adjustments, gasket replacement and hardware swap. Regular light maintenance keeps you inside the terms of most warranties.
